MEMORIAM OF ZHU YOUHUA

Zhu Youhua, also known as Ningxian ren, YiYang Ren, Banchi, Banchao, a direct descendant of Zhu Quan (1378-1448) the Prince of Ning of the Ming dynasty, was born in 1892 and died in 1975. His father Xihua, also known as Wanrong, was born in 1847, honored with the title of “Valiant Yellow Jacket Knight and the First Rank Marshal General” by the Emperor Tongzhi of the Qing dynasty, and died in the Boxer War in 1900. Giving up his academic pursuit at age 15, Youhua joined the Yili General Changgeng (also known as Kuldya Military Governor) in Xinjiang Uyghur. Following the footsteps of the Prince of Ning, Youhua first fought in wars and then retreated in hermitage in 1916, “carrying his Qin and sword in a yellow-ox-carriage with his wife toward great clusters of clouds gracing the top of the emerald mountains to settle in their haven”.

Youhua raised me. In the old town of yellow soil that tinted sky and earth, we experienced Tao Yuanming’s ideal life, “there was no dust in the house, but there was free time in the rooms,” when the gate of the courtyard was closed. Youhua was erudite in Chinese history, philosophy, literature, art and antiquity, and meditative arts. His poise and equanimity always emanated a culture that the modern world could disturb but could never acquire. Youhua’s subtle beauty of inner solitude, which enhanced his insight and wisdom, was often shared in tea drinking, reciting poetry, and playing Qin music with his friends, old-fashioned but well-known literati Zhao Wangyun, Chen Yaoting, Fan Cuiting, and Liu Yuzhong and so on. I had the most rare opportunity to grow up in this out dated but tranquil world. It was a peace unknown to the modern world, either communist or capitalist.

In 1978, when Deng Xiaoping’s great reform took place in China, I was able to enroll in a university and majored in classical European painting studies. Six years later I became a university art and humanity professor. Youhua’s old-fashioned yellow soil tinted sky and earth and my imagined outlandish world of Mediterranean lucid sky and clear sea mixed strangely with modernity and instigated my free will indeed. In 1989, I left China and came to the heartland of modernity, the USA. Upholding the noble idea of becoming a Western, modernistic, and free individual, I was excited and confronted while experiencing the abundant freedom in the USA, and the sublime landscape of modernity. Having been in the USA for nearly 30 years, I still live in a life where there is no dust, but there is free time. I read, meditate, keep koi, raise bonsai and drink tea. I have no intention to oppose modernity but I have a vision, a vision to encompass Youhua’s dust free world and the modern world.
